rain that fell during the month,

413

There were some 66 partial collapses in which

verandahs or front walls or cross walls were affected, and

some 24 buildings which collapsed entirely. In addition

there were landslides from Crown land in 11 instances.

Fortunately these collapses and landslides appear not to have been attended by any casualities of a serious

nature.

Tong Hoi Chong Village muffered from inundation

consequent on the heavy rain and some 30 village houses

were destroyed. As the inundation was materially increased

by road works recently made by Goverment the question of

compensation to the villagers is under consideration.

The Peak District suffered probably more severely

than elsewhere, Practically not e single house was unaffected, many were unroofed or so badly damaged as to

be uninhabitable for a considerable time.

Great havec was played by the high winds to the

trees and shrubs in the Botanical Gardens in the various

grounds and parks, in plantations and to the roadside trees. Many trees of scientific or económic interest have been greatly disfigured or destroyed and a long time must elapse! before the damage done can be effaced. It is clear that too many trees now exist in the streets of this Colony exposed as it is to periodical visitations of typhoons and it is proposed gradually to reduce their number.

The Kowloon-Centen Railway, which had already

suffered domage by a landslide after heavy rain on the 14th June also requires considerably repairs which will cost at least $15,000. The damage might however have been much greater. The permanent way was not seriously damaged though the pitching to banka alongside Tide Cove and Tolo Harbours will take some time to repair and the speed of traine has meanwhile to be restricted.
